DevOps Porto #16: Testing travel guide to Continuous Delivery

Welcome to our 16th meetup about DevOps and it's culture, values and practices. This time our meetup will be hosted by I2S.

In a fast paced and agile world organizations have to move fast so that they can deliver high value to their customers. Continuous Delivery is a major trend in tech industry, but we cannot compromise quality for speed. Companies need to adapt their delivery process for such a frequent release schedule.

How can you adapt your growing test suite so that you are not trapped in a “slow” delivery process? How can you divide tests in types and levels for a better optimization? What tests should you have for your specific project?
But it's not just about tests. How can you design your pipelines to cope with this new testing mindeset? How can a DevOps mindset help a team be more productive while having a better testing coverage? This talk aims to explain how to deliver better software in a fast way at the same time.

Our invited speaker André Carmo will show his point of view about this.

André Carmo (https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrecarmo/) is a Senior Infrastructure Engineer at Farfetch, after being a Test Automation Lead. He has been helping the Farfetch tech team to have better continuous delivery by spreading the word about test automation, by developing testing tools and frameworks, and by implementing complex but simple to use pipelines for continuous delivery. With 5+ years of experience in software testing, he was also a software developer in the past. He is very happy to learn new things from new people.

DevOps Porto #15: Acceptance Testing for Continuous Delivery

Welcome to our 15th meetup about DevOps and it's culture, values and practices. This time around we will hosting Dave Farley (@davefarley77), the well known thought leader and co-author of the seminal book "Continuous Delivery". Currently, he is an independent software developer and consultant, and founder and director of Continuous Delivery Ltd. He will be talking about Acceptance Testing for Continuous Delivery.

Writing and maintaining a suite of acceptance tests that can give you a high level of confidence in the behaviour and configuration of your system is a complex task. In this talk Dave will describe approaches to acceptance testing that allow teams to: work quickly and effectively; build excellent functional coverage for complex enterprise-scale systems; manage and maintain those tests in the face of change, and of evolution in both the codebase and the understanding of the business problem.

This talk will answer the following questions, and more: How do you fail fast? How do you make your testing scalable? How do you isolate test cases from one-another? How do you maintain a working body of tests when you radically change the interface to your system?

Agenda:
• Welcome
• Acceptance Testing for Continuous Delivery by Dave Farley
• Open space forum
• Coffee & Networking
• Closing

A special thanks to the DevOps Lisbon team for helping coordinate Dave's presence with us. He'll be presenting at their meetup on the 16th (https://www.meetup.com/pt-BR/DevOps-Lisbon/events/246008861/)

Date With Data #26: Parlamento

Talk 1: “Data Science NOW! (and other not so deep thoughts about AI)”, Luis Matias from NEC Laboratories Europe (Heidelberg, Germany)

In this presentation, we approach the issue of defining Data Science
as the ability to transform raw data into information in an (almost…)
automated fashion. We highlight the different stages that may precede
the deployment of AI-systems in production-ready environments that
actually enclose a good value proposition by using concrete examples
of accomplished projects from Transport and Logistics (with open
discussion for other verticals). We will also highlight the power of underestimated DS stages nowadays such as data wrangling, exploratory data analysis, visualization and interpretability on providing
insights on how valuable your data and models are for your business. I
hope to minimize the amount of throws of rotten tomatoes by making the
audience laugh now and then with not so deep stuff.

Short Bio: Dr. Luis Moreira-Matias received his Ms.c. degree in Informatics
Engineering and Ph.d. degree in Computer Science (major in Machine
Learning) from the University of Porto, in 2009 and 2015,
respectively. Luis served in the Program Committee and/or as invited
reviewer of multiple high-impact research venues such as KDD, AAAI,
IEEE TKDE, ESWA, ECML/PKDD and KAIS, among others. Moreover, he
encloses a successful track record of real-world deployment of
AI-based software products across EMEA and APAC. Currently, he is Senior Researcher at NEC Laboratories Europe (Heidelberg, Germany), where he is fortunate to lead R&D of AI-based software for Transport, Retail and Fintech industries. He was fortunate to be invited to give keynotes around the globe, ranging locations from Brisbane (Australia) to Las Palmas (Spain). Academically, Luis authored 40+ high-impact peer-reviewer publications on related topics.

Talk 2: Talk 1: AI&ML @Critical Software: A Guided Tour, Tiago Baptista , Critical Software

This talk will give a general overview of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning area at Critical Software. Within the company, the department has formally started in mid 2017 as an effort to organize internal knowledge and provide new AI focused products and services. We will give an overview of how this area is seen at Critical and provide a general description of some our projects in AI&ML, and, whenever possible, discuss some of the approaches used.

Bio:

Tiago Baptista is a Senior Engineer at Critical Software, working as a member of Artificial Intelligence team. He holds a B.Sc. and a Ph.D., both in Informatics Engineering from that same university. He is a member of the Evolutionary and Complex Systems research group (ECOS) of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC), where he conducts research mostly on evolutionary computation, artificial life, and complex systems. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering of the University of Coimbra, where he taught courses such as Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving, or Complex Systems. PyPorto #6: From idea to reality & Project Jupyter

We are happy to announce the 6th meetup! :)

This time we'll be at Founders Founders (right next to the metro Marques) bringing fresh new Pythonic talks.
Drinks and food will be kindly provided by Tonic App.

## Schedule

We are trying out a new format for our meetups:
- 18h30: Meeting and drinking :)
- 18h45: Creating a powerful tool with Python. Our success story by Tomás Lima
- 19h10: Beers and Chats
- 19h40: Project Jupyter. More that just a Pyton Notebook by Roman
- 20h10: End :(

## Creating a powerful tool with Python. Our success story

Three years ago a group of passionate Information Security professionals set to themselves an ambitious goal to create an enterprise-grade solution for IT security teams. They picked Python as a platform, despite having close to zero experience with it in the beginning. The idea is turned eventually to an Open Source project, which is actively maintained by the community and adopted by several organizations around the world. In the talk Tomás will outline his motivation, challenges, lessons learned and answer the questions of why we decided to use Python and why is important to be open source.

Tomás Lima is a Information Security professional with background in development.

## Project Jupyter. More that just a Pyton Notebook

Formerly known as IPython, the project Jupyter demonstrates a phenomenal growth. Now it’s literally everywhere, used from tutoring to data analysis, and from a conference and meetup presentation platform to a website engine. With more than hundred kernels, it allows you to write and execute the code not just in Python, but in R, Julia, MATLAB… and then Perl, PHP, Erlang, bash… and in the languages you’ve probably never heard of. Can you imagine? it’s 100+ literally! I didn’t know that.

A couple of weeks ago the project released the first stable version of the JupyterHub, a pluggable installation of the Jupyter platform suitable for collaborative work. This news gave me a pretext to talk about Jupyter and what kind of tool it can be turned into, for you and probably for the organization you work on.

I start with a bit of the IPython and Jupyter history and architecture, then make an overview of their newer, much more powerful but less known projects JupyterLab and JupyterHub, and finish my talk some speculations on how it all can be exploited for your fun and profit.

Roman is the head of the web development team of Doist, the software company which helps people do more and stress less. Calling himself climatic refugee from Russia, almost three years ago he moved with his family to Porto, and fell in love with the city and people. Along with other likeminded persons, he fosters and grows the Python community of the city.
